Stepping Up Malaria Prevention as the Risk Season Approaches

Malaria season is back! This infectious disease is still present in many tropical regions, including Vietnam.

As rainfall becomes more frequent (from April-May and September-October), the environment becomes more favorable for mosquitoes to breed, including Anopheles - the vector that transmits malaria.

For this reason, World Malaria Day (April 25 every year) is also chosen as an important occasion to raise community awareness about this dangerous infectious disease, while calling for the whole of society to join forces in prevention and control efforts. Despite significant progress in treatment, malaria remains a health threat in many countries, especially in tropical regions.

Vietnam has not yet rolled out a malaria vaccine. The best way to prevent malaria remains eliminating mosquitoes and larvae, and applying measures to prevent mosquito bites, such as:

  • Sleeping under a mosquito net regularly, both day and night.

  • Using mosquito repellent measures when necessary, and spraying insecticide.

  • Keeping the living environment well-ventilated and limiting mosquito breeding sites (stagnant water).

  • Covering the body and wearing long clothing when visiting areas with active outbreaks.

In response to World Malaria Day 2026 with the message "Determined to End Malaria: We Can Do It Now - We Must Do It Now," HIU Hospital recommends that people proactively monitor their health and seek medical examination early as soon as suspicious signs appear.

If symptoms of malaria appear, such as high fever, chills, sweating, and headache, go immediately to a medical facility for a blood test.

Never self-medicate at home, as this can worsen the condition or cause drug resistance.
